A patient with a facial port wine stain can have significant impairment in the quality of life. Hagen et al identified factors impacting the patient's response to the lesion. The authors are from the University of Minnesota and University of California Irvine.
Factors associated with a reduced quality of life for a patient with a facial port wine stain:
(1) depression
(2) limited/decreased facial mobility
(3) other comorbid skin conditions
(4) associated hypertrophy of the port wine stain
(5) bilateral port wine stain
(6) non-Caucasian race
Factors associated with a better quality of life:
(1) older age
(2) more close friends
(3) frequent social engagement (less social isolation)
(4) receipt of special education services
