Description

Goodyer et al identified factors associated with whcih antimalarial drug regimen is selected for prophylaxis by a traveler. The authors are from De Montfort University and GlaxoSmithKline in England.

Key factors in the choice of a prophylactic antimalarial:

(1) effectiveness

(2) side effects, both number and severity (perceived safety)

(3) previous experience with antimalarials (good and bad)

(4) dosing convenience

Other factors:

(1) recommendation of the practitioner

(2) cost to the patient

(3) duration of therapy after return (some travelers do not complete the required duration of therapy after return, so the shorter the duration the better for adherence)

(4) restrictions (with alcohol, sun exposure, etc)

(5) interactions with other medications

(6) recommendations of family and friends
