Description

A woman with Stage IV ovarian cancer may or may not benefit from debulking surgery.

A woman may benefit from debulking surgery if:

(1) optimal debulking can be achieved (largest focus of residual disease <= 2 cm in diameter)

(2) age < 65 years

(3) ECOG performance status <=2

(4) no liver metastases or resectable liver metastases

(5) residual tumor is sensitive to chemotherapy

where:

• Other authors define optimal debulking as a maximum residual diameter of <= 1 cm.

A woman with unresectable liver metastases may benefit from surgery if optimal debulking can be achieved (Bristow et al).
