Description

Some people may really think that they are pregnant when they are not and when there is concrete evidence against it. The presence of a delusion is fairly obvious in an elderly patient or an adult male. A woman of childbearing age with a delusion of pregnancy may be diagnosed as having pseudocyesis (false pregnancy).

Factors that may contribute to a delusion of pregnancy:

(1) schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder

(2) depression or mania (as a psychotic symptom)

(3) drug or chemical-induced psychosis

(4) hyperprolactinemia (prolactinoma, drug-induced)

(5) frontotemporal or other dementia syndrome (neurodegenerative disorder)

(6) male with sexual identity confusion

(7) strong desire for children
