Obesity may contribute to sexual dysfunction in a male for several reasons. Weight loss to normal levels can significantly improve a male's sexual status.


 

Factors contributing to sexual dysfunction:

(1) concurrent diabetes

(2) concurrent hypertension

(3) concurrent smoking

(4) concurrent atherosclerosis

(5) reduced testosterone

(6) increased estrogen

(7) poor self-image

(8) poor appearance

(9) anxiety and depression

(10) medications

(11) metabolic syndrome

 

Sexual dysfunction that may be seen in the severely obese male:

(1) reduced sex drive

(2) erectile dysfunction

(3) premature ejaculation

(4) reduced sexual satisfaction

 

Significant weight loss may impact the factors contributing to the sexual dysfunction. Bariatric surgery can significantly improve sexual function in the morbidly obese male.
