Description

Palchaudhuri et al reported factors associated with hospital readmission for a patient discharged on enteral nutrition. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania.

Patient selection: hospitalized patient discharged on enteral nutrition.

A patient discharged on enteral nutrition usually has some degree of malnutrition. Malnutrition is associated with greater risk of hospital readmission. In addition, being on enteral nutrition increases the risk of readmission.

Reasons for readmission:

(1) issues related to enteral access device

(2) gastrointestinal symptoms

(3) sodium imbalance

(4) aspiration pneumonia

More aggressive management may be indicated for patients discharged on enteral nutrition.
