A patient with the asthma-COPD overlap syndrome may have a poor quality of life.
In general the quality of life for a patient with the overlap syndrome is worse than either component alone.
Additional factors associated with a worse quality of life:
(1) female gender
(2) obesity
(3) long duration of disease
(4) disability pension
(5) co-existing cardiovascular disease
The presence of the overlap syndrome should prompt a review of the patient's quality of life, especially if additional factors are present.
