Description

Deployment of an airbag during an automobile accident may result in injury to the driver. Anectdotal stories (similar to those reporting death from use of seat belts) have caused some drivers to demand that the airbag be disconnected. However, in the vast majority of cases the benefits of an airbag outweigh the hazards.

An airbag helps prevent impact of the occupant with the steering wheel, windshield or dashboard. It should be used in conjunction with passive restraints.

Phases of airbag deployment:

(1) detection of crash

(2) deployment/inflation

(3) deflation during and after occupant impact

Injuries have occurred in when the person comes into contact with the bag during the deployment phase:

(1) people who sit very close to the steering wheel

(2) infants in a car seat in the front seat

(3) people with some physical deformities

In addition to impact injuries, an occupant may suffer chemical burns (from the byproducts of the propellant charge) or abrasions with seams.

Alternatives to disconnection of the airbags:

(1) protective goggles for patients who have had previous ophthalmic surgery or patients with glasses

(2) use of an airbag system that is "smart" or that reduces maximal pressures during the inflation phase

(3) adjusting the driver's position back at least 10 inches (25.4 cm) from the airbag (to delay contact with the airbag)

(4) minimizing foreign objects around the face (pipes, nonprescription glasses)

Disconnection may be required rarely for occupants who cannot maintain:

(1) proper positioning

(2) a safe distance from the airbag.

Occupants who may require disconnection:

(1) severe scoliosis

(2) wheelchair use

(3) Down syndrome with atlanto-axial instability

(4) infant who must be placed in a front seat to be monitored by the driver

Installation of an on-off switch to temporarily disconnect the airbag requires a letter from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It can be performed at the authorized dealer or service station.

A person who has had the airbag disconnected must use some form of restraint system.
