Description

A number of factors may affect clinical outcome in a patient with the Short Bowel Syndrome.


 

Favorable features of the intestinal resection:

(1) a long length of small bowel preserved

(2) ileum preserved

(3) ileocecal valve preserved

(4) colon preserved

 

Additional favorable findings:

(1) younger age

(2) no comorbid or ongoing disease (disease free)

 

Unfavorable findings:

(1) sepsis

(2) ongoing bowel disease

(3) dysfunction in other organs (heart, renal, pulmonary, hepatic, other)

(4) poor tolerance of nutrition replacement (total parenteral nutrition, other)
