Description

Noise sensitivity refers to the level of annoyance or other emotions that a person feels after being exposed to a noise. A specific noise may elicit a broad range of responses between individuals and sometimes for the same individual (wide inter- and intra-observer variation).

Some of the variables that may affect a person's noise sensitivity:

(1) hyperacusis

(2) degree of habituation to noise

(3) temporal issues as to what time of day the noise occurs

(4) specific type or loudness of noise

(5) psychological and health status, including other environmental sensitvities

(6) timing of medications and drugs

Self-declared noise sensitivity may be associated with (Baliatsas et al, Heinonen-Guzejev et al):

(1) disability

(2) poor health status

(3) increased illness behavior
