Description

A vacuum constriction device (VCD) can be effective for a male with erectile dysfunction. Some men may try it only to discontinue its use later.

A man who prefers the VCD tends:

(1) to be older

(2) to expect intercourse to occur infrequently

(3) to have an understanding and motivated partner

(4) not to be a candidate for intracavernosal injections or a penile prosthesis

(5) not to be able to take sildenafil or other oral agent due to adverse side effects

(6) to have significant comorbidities

(7) to have enough manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate the device

(8) to not have had a problem while using it

The combination of a VCD and sildenafil (or related drug) may be very effective for some patients.

Users tend to prefer a VCD that:

(1) can be operated with one hand

(2) is simple to understand and operate

(3) has safety features

(4) gives the user a sense of control
