Tissue elements in a histologic section may appear separated by a clear space rather than being in continuity.
Exclusion: cracks/fissures, knife marks, scratches/tears
Risk factors:
(1) overstretching of the tissue section on the water bath
(2) letting the tissue section float for too long
(3) placing the slide in the dryer before the cut section has completely drained
Separation of tissue elements can be avoided by avoiding the causative risk factors.
