Shigella species primarily cause an enteritis. Occasionally patients show extraintestinal sites of infection or manifestations.
Shigella may cause:
(1) bacteremia
(2) vulvitis
(3) endometritis
(4) keratitis
(5) pneumonia
(6) meningitis
Risk factors for systemic disease:
(1) HIV disease
(2) other immunocompromised patients
(3) age > 65 years
(4) severe enteritis
Extraintestinal manifestations:
(1) myocarditis
(2) encephalopathy
(3) hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)
(4) hyponatremia
(5) leukemoid reaction
