Description

Extortion refers to a range of criminal activities intended to extract something from the target. It is considered a form of theft.


Features of extortion:

(1) A person threatens the victim with one or more negative actions.

(2) Usually there is no threat of imminent violence (as is seen in robbery).

(3) The victim can avoid the negative act by giving something in exchange (coercion).

(4) The victim is an unwilling participant (involuntary).

 

Negative acts might include:

(1) property damage

(2) future violence

(3) damage to reputation (blackmail)

(4) government investigation

(5) exclusion from an activity

 

The threat may be indirect or implied and referred to as insurance.

 

Criminal gain:

(1) money

(2) favorable action

(3) tangible asset
