Description

A lighter solid will float on a denser fluid. The volume exposed can be estimated if certain physical characteristics are known.

Situation: solid in a liquid with the density of the solid less than the density of the liquid

Parameters:

(1) density of solid

(2) density of the fluid

(3) volume of the solid

(4) volume of the liquid displaced by the solid, which is usually less than the volume of the solid

weight of object =

= (volume of solid) * (density of solid) =

= (volume of liquid displaced) * (density of the liquid)

volume of liquid displaced) / (volume of solid) =

= (density of solid) / (density of liquid)

volume of liquid displaced =

= (volume of solid) * (density of solid) / (density of liquid)

volume of solid exposed to view =

= (volume of solid) - (volume of liquid displaced =

= (volume of solid) * (1 - ((density of solid) / (density of liquid)))
