Description

An explosion may occur in a storage silo if certain factors are present. A large silo filled with organic dust can result in a devastating blast that can kill.

Essential elements for a storage silo explosion:

(1) dispersion of a flammable dust (flour, corn meal, other agricultural produce, mineral dust)

(2) oxygen

(3) ignition source

Additional elements that may contribute:

(1) adjacent fuel sources

(2) methane or other flammable gases from microbial metabolism

Ignition sources:

(1) electrical spark

(2) friction-related overheating (overheated bearings, rubbing conveyer belt)

(3) match or cigarette

(4) spontaneous if organic material becomes moist (due to exothermic microbial growth)

(5) welding torch

(6) fire
