Description

Older adults are at increased of falls. An exercise program can address problem areas and reduce the risk of falls.


Problems faced by the elderly:

(1) sedentary lifestyle with deconditioning

(2) sensory problems - vision, hearing, coordination, proprioception

 

Exercise should target problem areas:

(1) balance and coordination

(2) muscle strength

(3) aerobic (walking, other)

 

Exercise may take the form of one or both of the following:

(1) scheduled exercise sessions every week

(2) exercises that can be included in the person's home routines

 

Other interventions:

(1) medication review

(2) home safety survey
