Description

Pneumothorax associated with exercise is uncommon and always needs to be investigated until a cause is identified.


Exercise-induced pneumothorax may present with chest pain, shortness of breath and/or cough.

 

Conditions associated with exercise-induced pneumothorax:

(1) chest trauma

(2) chest tumor (leiomyomatosis, malignant lymphoma, pleural tumor, other)

(3) menstruation (catamenial)

(4) bulla

(5) cystic fibrosis

(6) Marfan syndrome

(7) anorexia nervosa

(8) strenuous exercise with Valsalva maneuver
