Description

Metabolic acidosis may develop during exercise due to accumulation of acids. This acidosis clears during recovery and may limit exercise if severe.

Features:

(1) In metabolic acidosis the pH and base excess should fall.

(2) With intense exercise there may be an accumulation of lactic acid (due to overproduction and/or under removal).

Conditions affecting generation of lactic acid:

(1) mitochondrial myopathy

(2) McArdle disease

(3) COPD and other conditions with hypoxia

In some patients ketoacidosis may also contribute to the metabolic acidosis.
