A patient with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome can engage in exercise provided certain precautions are taken.
Recommended exercise: low-resistance/low-impact exercise
Complications of contact sports or high-resistance exercise:
(1) joint dislocation
(2) skin abrasions or tears secondary to skin fragility
(3) bruising and bleeding
Protective pads may be helpful over joints prone to skin damage.
Additional problems that may interfere with exercise:
(1) pain
(2) beta-blocker medication
(3) osteoporosis
(4) degenerative arthritis
(5) delayed wound healing
(6) muscle cramps
(7) hypotonia
(8) hernias
(9) easy fatigability
