Description

A vector control program often requires a concerted effort by many people and the allocation of adequate resources. These may not available under certain circumstances, which can result in an outbreak of vector-borne disease.

Issues required for a vector control program:

(1) planning with cost estimates based on projections

(2) availability of sufficient numbers of trained people

(3) transportation of workers and control materials

(4) communication and media access

(5) purchase of control materials

(6) monitoring for effectiveness

Factors that may disrupt a vector control program:

(1) war or civil unrest

(2) economic depression

(3) natural disaster

(4) population displacement by other factors (dam building, urban development, other)

Factors that may interfere with the effectiveness of a control program:

(1) emergence of vectors resistant to control measures

(2) sudden expansion in vector habitat

(3) weather change favoring a surge in vector development
