Description

Several blood markers can be helpful in recognition of neonatal sepsis. Ruan et al looked at cut-offs for 3 markers. The authors are Guangxi Medical University in Nanning, China.

Presepsin = soluble CD14 subtype

Patient selection: neonate

Blood markers:

(1) procalcitonin in ng/mL

(2) C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/L

(3) presepsin in µg/L

The cutoff of 722 µg/L for presepsin had a greater sensitivity and specificity than a cut=off at 539.

The cut-offs should vary with the method and manufacturer.

The sensitivity and specificity for the tests varies with global region.

The area under the ROC curve for procalcitonin plus CRP was 0.96.

The area under the ROC curve for presepsin was 0.99.
