Description

Asher-McDade et al developed a scale for evaluating the nasolabial attractiveness of a patient following surgery. This can be used to compare treatment outcomes between different institutions. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Europe.

Parameters evaluated:

(1) nasal form on a frontal view

(2) deviation of the nose relative to a sagittal line in the midline

(3) shape of the vermilion border

(4) profile appearance of nose and upper lip

Appearance

Points

very good

1

good

2

fair

3

poor

4

very poor

5

Alternatively a VAS scale from 0 to 10 cm could be used.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

mean score =

= (total score) / 4

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 4

• maximum total score: 20

• The higher the score the less attractive the appearance.

To be an effective outcome measure, patients need to be equivalent prior to therapy. The score could be used both before and after surgery and the change noted.
