Description

A neonate born to a mother with well-controlled asthma usually has few problems that can be ascribed to the asthma. However, problems with maternal asthma control can mean problems for a newborn infant.

Possible problems for a neonate born to a mother with severe or poorly controlled asthma:

(1) preterm delivery

(2) emergency Cesarean section (due to pre-eclampsia, placenta praevia or other cause)

(3) congenital malformations

(4) hyperbilirubinemia

(5) hypoglycemia

(6) transient tachypnea

(7) fetal growth retardation and/or oligohydramnios

Other causes should be excluded before ascribing these to the maternal asthma.

Careful management of the mother during the pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of these complications.
