Description

Euphorbia species are ornamental plants that can cause ocular toxicity. The plant (named for the ancient physician Euphorbus) has been used for centuries to treat warts and other skin lesions.


 

These plants produce a thick, milky sap.

 

Clinical features following an ocular exposure include:

(1) red eye

(2) burning and stinging of the eyes

(3) blurred vision

(4) reduced visual acuity

(5) mild to severe keratitis

 

Keratitis may be associated with:

(1) stromal edema

(2) epithelial sloughing

(3) corneal ulceration

(4) anterior uveitis

 

Severe cases can result in blindness.

 

Milder cases resolve after 1-2 weeks.

 

Preventive measures:

(1) wearing goggles when around the plants

(2) wearing gloves while handling the plant

(3) washing the hands with soap and water after contract

(4) not rubbing the eyes during or after handling the plants
