Description

A rough estimate of the amount of solutes in the urine can be made from the specific gravity of the urine.

solute factor =

= ((specific gravity) – 1.000) * 1000

dry weight of solute in grams per liter =

= (solute factor) * (age factor)

dry weight of solute in grams per 24 hours =

= (dry weight of solute in grams per liter) * (liters of urine per 24 hours)

where:

• age factor = 2.6 for adults, 1.6 for small children

• The solute factor represents the second and third decimal places to the right of the decimal place.
