Description

Yock and Popp determined the right ventricular systolic pressure of a patient with tricuspid regurgitation using Doppler ultrasonography. The authors are from Stanford University.

Patient selection: tricuspid regurgitation

Parameters:

(1) maximum velocity of the regurgitant jet through the tricuspid valve during systole in meters per second

(2) mean right atrial pressure (approximated by the jugular venous pressure)

systolic pressure gradient between right ventricle and right atrium =

= 4 * ((velocity)^2)

right ventricular systolic pressure in mm Hg =

= (systolic pressure gradient) + (jugular venous pressure)

where:

• The maximum velocity occurs prior to the v wave in the jugular pressure waves.
