Miccoli et al estimated the volume of the thyroid gland based on measurements from ultrasonography. The authors are from the Universita degli Studi di Pisa in Italy.
Method:
(1) assumes that each lobe is an ellipsoid
(2) does not include the isthmus
Parameter:
(1) length in cm
(2) width in cm
(3) depth in cm
volume for a hemilobe =
= PI() / 6 * (length) * (width) * (depth)
total volume =
= (volume of left hemilobe) + (volume of right hemilobe)
Accuracy of estimate:
(1) The method tends to understimate the volume.
(2) The estimate tends to improve with larger thyroid glands.
(3) The estimate tends to be worse if the thyroid gland is multinodular and deformed.
It would be interesting if including the isthmus would improve the performance.
