During special processing procedures such as thawing of frozen units, red blood cells are lost. The goal is to minimize the loss to maximize recovery.
percent red cell recovery =
= ((hematocrit of product after processing) * (volume of product after processing) * 100) / ((hematocrit of product before processing) * (volume of product before processing))
Guidelines for deglycerolized cell processing include that recovery be at least 80% of the original red cells.
