Description

The force experienced during the crash of an airplane can be estimated based on the pattern of injuries seen. Investigators from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) developed these based on their experience with different types of aircraft accidents.

Force in G's

Injury

lung contusions

30 - 35 G

rupture of the atlanto-occipital membrane

>= 50 G

laceration of the aorta, skull fracture

>= 80 G
