It is possible to estimate the amount of patient blood in suctioned fluid that is a mixture of blood with other fluids. Knowing this volume can help to guide blood replacement therapy.
Parameters:
(1) volume of suction fluid in mL
(2) hematocrit of the suction fluid in percent
(3) hematocrit of the patient's blood determined at the same time
(hematocrit of suction fluid) / (hematocrit of patient's blood) =
= (volume of patient blood) / (volume of suction fluid)
volume of blood in the suction fluid =
= (volume of suction fluid) * (hematocrit of suction fluid) / (hematocrit of the patient's blood)
