The number of adult hookworms in a patient can be estimated based on the fecal egg count.
Test: Stoll-Hasheer egg count, reporting eggs per gram feces
Hookworm Species |
Eggs Produced per Adult Female per Day |
Ancylostoma duodenale |
25,000 to 30,000 |
Necator americanus |
6,000 to 20,000 |
Parameters:
(1) hookworm species
(2) egg count per gram feces
(3) 24 fecal weight
total number of eggs produced per day =
= (egg count per gram feces) * (24 hour fecal weight in grams)
number of adult female worms present =
= (total number of eggs produced per day) / (number of eggs per adult female per day)
amount of blood loss per day =
= (amount of blood per adult worm) * (number of adult female worms)
where:
• The daily amount of blood per adult worm is listed in 24.39.02.
Interpretation:
• An egg count > 2,500 eggs per gram is usually associated with symptoms.
• A worm count < 25 is considered clinically insignificant.
• A worm count > 500 is usually associated with symptomatic disease.
