Description

Infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia who require chronic ventilation have an increased mortality rate predictable from clinical parameters based on equations developed using logistic regression analysis. The estimates of mortality can be done on data at 30 and 60 days of life.

Equations at 30 Days of Life

factor at an age of 30 days =

= (-5.952) + (0.4538 * (mean airway pressure in cm H2O at 30 days))

factor at an age of 30 days incorporating sepsis =

= (-6.510) + (0.4588 * (mean airway pressure in cm H2O at days)) + (1.475 * (documented sepsis episodes))

where

• documented sepsis episodes = 1 if there were any documented episodes of sepsis during the first month of life, or 0 if there were no documented episodes

probability of mortality at 30 days =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * (factor)))

Equations at 60 Days of Life

factor at 60 days of age =

= (-7.668) + (0.2940 * (mean airway pressure in cm H2O at 60 days)) + (5.935 * (FIO2 at 60 days of age))

where

• FIO2 is the fractional inspiratory oxygen (ranging from room air at 0.21 to 1.00 at 100% oxygen)

probability of mortality at 60 days =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * (factor)))
