Description

A patient's hemoglobin A1c can be estimated from the fasting blood glucose level. The authors are from the Jaeb Center for Health Research in Tampa and the International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis.

Parameter:

(1) blood glucose in mg/dL

estimated hemoglobin A1c in percent =

= (0.02345 * (glucose)) + 3.38

Rearranged:

average blood glucose in mg/dL =

= (hemoglobin A1c - 3.38) / 0.02345 = (42.6439 * (HbA1c)) - 144.1364

As mentioned in the abstract: The HbA1c may or may not be a good indicator of an individual's glycemic control because of the wide range of mean glucose concentrations and glucose profiles that can be associated with a given HbA1c level.
