If the purported father of a fetus or infant has died, a number of steps can be taken to include or exclude paternity.


 

Sources of the man’s DNA may be include:

(1) blood stain card or tissue recovered at autopsy

(2) surgical pathology specimen or paraffin blocks

(3) military or police records (FBI Combined DNA Index System)

(4) previous genetic testing

(5) hair brush

(6) exumation

 

If no direct samples are available, then the man’s DNA signature can be reconstructed if sufficient family members are available, which may include:

(1) parents

(2) siblings

(3) children
