Description

Traumatic injury to the esophagus can be graded using the Esophagus Injury Scale.


 

Type of Injury

Description

Grade

contusion or hematoma

 

I

laceration

<= 50% of circumference

II

 

> 50% of circumference

III

segmental loss or devascularization

<= 2 cm

IV

 

> 2 cm

V

 

If more than 1 injury is present, then increase the final Grade by 1 up to Grade III.

 

where:

• I am assuming that the increase in grade for multiple injuries applies for Grade II to III, but not III to IV.
