Description

The degree of esophageal stenosis can be graded using the Esophageal Stenotic Ratio (ESR).

Requirement: imaging study of the esophagus (usually a barium swallow but can be done on a scan with horizontal sections

Parameters:

(1) diameter of the esophagus at its widest point on the oral side (above the stensois)

(2) diameter of the esophagus at its narrowest point (at the stenosis)

esophageal stenotic ratio in percent =

= ((widest diameter) – (narrowest diameter)) / (widest diameter) * 100%

where:

• The widest point will exceed the normal diameter if the esophagus is distended.

• A narrow stricture will be associated with a more distended segment above.
