Description

Candida esophagitis tends to occur in patients with one or more risk factors.


 

Risk factors for Candida esophagitis:

(1) following broad spectrum antibiotic therapy (with suppression of normal flora)

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) immunocompromise associated with malignant neoplasm and/or chemoradiation

(4) HIV disease

(5) immunodeficiency state

(6) immunosuppressive therapy (corticosteroids, etc)

(7) scleroderma

(8) esophageal stricture

(9) achalasia

(10) following fundoplication
