Description

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in males with acromegaly, possibly due to the effect of growth hormone on the  nitric oxide cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway.


Severe ED tends to be seen in patients with a longer disease duration.

 

Endocrine factors:

(1) hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

(2) hyperprolactinemia

(3) diabetes

 

Cardiovascular comorbidities:

(1) cardiomyopathy

(2) hypertension

 

Other risk factors:

(1) smoking

(2) sleep apnea

(3) depression

(4) drugs

 

Control of growth hormone secretion and other risk factors can improve erectile function.
