Description

A male bicycle rider may develop an erectile dysfunction due to pudendal neuropathy caused by nerve compression while riding.


 

Mechanism: Compression of the dorsal branch of the pudendal nerve between the saddle and the symphysis pubis

 

Signs and symptoms:

(1) numbness in the perineum and penis

(2) erectile dysfunction

(3) impotence

 

Bicycle riders at risk:

(1) long distance bicycle rider

(2) bicycle racer

(3) policeman or security guard who patrols by bicycle

(4) urban bicycle messenger

 

Risk factors for nerve injury:

(1) bicycle riding for a prolonged period

(2) hard, unpadded bicycle seat

(3) unpadded bicycle shorts

(4) long protruding saddle nose

(5) high load on the bicycle seat (from body weight and/or equipment being carried)
