Description

Zhu et al reported a number of equations for estimating the weight of a child less than 6 years old in the United States. One group of equations uses forearm width. The authors are from Kaiser Permanente, NIH, University of Texas at Austin, University of Minnesota, Johns Hopkins University, Michigan State University, UCLA and Purdue University.

Patient selection: age 0 to 5.9 years in the United States

Parameters:

(1) ethnic group

(2) length or height in centimeters (recumbent if < 2 years old, else standing)

(3) forearm width in cm (maximum width of the right arm with palm down onto a table)

(4) age in years

(5) ulnar length in cm

weight in kilograms =

= (0.35 * (points for ethnicity)) + (0.25 * (length)) - (10.63 * (forearm width)) + (1.12 * ((forearm width)^2)) + 15.89

weight in kilograms =

= (0.22 * (points for ethnicity)) + (1.15 * (age)) + (0.76 * (ulnar length)) - (9.21* (forearm width)) + (1.03 * ((forearm width)^2)) + 19.45
