Description

Zhu et al reported a number of equations for estimating the weight of a child less than 6 years old in the United States. One group of equations uses forearm circumference. The authors are from Kaiser Permanente, NIH, University of Texas at Austin, University of Minnesota, Johns Hopkins University, Michigan State University, UCLA and Purdue University.

Patient selection: age 0 to 5.9 years in the United States

Parameters:

(1) ethnic group

(2) length in centimeters

(3) forearm circumference in cm (maximum circumference of the right arm with palm down onto a table)

(4) age in years

(5) ulnar length in cm

weight in kilograms =

= (0.40 * (points for ethnicity)) + (0.21 * (length)) - (2.51 * (forearm circumference)) + (0.1 * ((forearm circumference)^2)) + 6.91

weight in kilograms =

= (0.37 * (points for ethnicity)) + (1.04 * (age)) + (0.59 * (ulnar length)) - (1.65* (forearm circumference)) + (0.09 * ((forearm circumference)^2)) + 6.25
