Description

Yamada et al reported equations using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) data for estimation of appendicular skeletal muscle mass. These equations are age independent. The authors are from the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition in Tokyo and TANITA Corporation.

Patient selection: 18 to 86-year old Japanese

Parameters:

(1) height in cm

(2) reactance at 50 kHz in Ohms (Z50)

(3) reactance at 250 kHz in Ohms (Z250)

(4) reactance at 5 kHz in Ohms (Z5)

appendicular skeletal muscle mass in kg for a man =

= (0.6947 * ((height)^2) / Z50) - (55.24* Z250 / Z5)) - (10,940 / Z50) + 51.33

appendicular skeletal muscle mass in kg for a woman =

= (0.6144 * ((height)^2) / Z50) - (36.61* Z250 / Z5) - (9,332 / Z50) + 37.91

where:

((height)^2) / Z50 is equivalent to ((height)^2) / R50
