Albert, Dell and Winters reported equations for estimating PCO2 in plasma of a patient with metabolic acidosis. The authors are from Columbia University and the Babies Hospital at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.
Patient selection: metabolic acidosis
Parameters:
(1) serum/plasma base excess in mEq1/L (mmol/L), from -26 to -6
(2) plasma bicarbonate in mEq/L (mmol/L), from 2 to 18
(3) blood pH, from 7.10 to 7.35
PCO2 in mm Hg =
= (1.07 * (base excess)) + 40.98, with standard error +/- 1.7 mm Hg
= (1.54 * (bicarbonate)) + 8.36, with standard error +/- 1.11 mm Hg
= (70.26 * (pH)) - 484.64, with standard error +/- 2.72 mm Hg
