Wennesland et al developed several equations for predicting the red cell volume in adult males. The authors are from the University of California San Francisco and University of California at Berkeley.
NOTE: The authors are the same as in the next section.
Subjects were adult males mostly in their 20's and 30's.
red cell volume in mL =
= (22.4 * (body height in cm)) - 1930
red cell volume in mL =
= (21.4 * (body weight in kg)) + 490
red cell volume in mL =
= (8.6 * (height in cm)) + (18.5 * (weight in kg)) - 830
red cell volume in mL =
= (1550 * (BSA in square meter)) - 890
Performance:
• The standard deviation was about 200 mL except for the height only equation which was 250 mL.
• The coefficient of variation is around 9.5% except for the height only equation which was 12%.
