Description

van der Ploeg et al reported several equations for estimating the resting metabolic rate (RMR) for young adult Australian males. The authors are from Flinders University and Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.

Patient selection: Australian males from 18 to 30 years of age

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) body height in centimeters

(3) age in years

(4) fat-free mass (FFM) using a 4-compartment model (Withers et al)

(5) fat-free mass (FFM) based on sum of 7 skinfold thickness measurements (triceps, subscapular, biceps, supraspinale, abdominal, front thigh, medial calf)

resting metabolic rate in kJoules per day=

= (53.5 * (weight)) + 3116

resting metabolic rate in kJoules per day=

= (45.5 * (weight)) + (24.6 * (height)) - 635

resting metabolic rate in kJoules per day=

= (48.2 * (weight)) + (25.8 * (height)) - (49.6 * (age)) + 113

resting metabolic rate in kJoules per day=

= (76.1 * (FFM by 4 compartment model)) + (21 * (weight)) - (56.2 * (age)) + 2202

resting metabolic rate in kJoules per day=

= (109.2 * (FFM by skinfold thickness)) - (68.4 * (age)) + 2092
