Description

Vali et al reported equations for determining the insertion length for umbilical catheters. Anatomic landmarks are used for calculating the length of the umbilical arterial catheter. The authors are from the University of California San Diego.

Anatomic landmarks:

(1) xiphoid

(2) umbilicus

(3) level of the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) in the midline

Measurements:

(1) distance from the xiphoid to the level of the ASIS in cm

(2) distance from the umbilicus to the level of the ASIS in cm

insertion length of the umbilical arterial catheter =

= (1.1 * ((xiphoid to ASIS distance) + (umbilicus to ASIS distance)) + 1.6
