Description

Stevens et al reported 3 equations for estimating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using serum cystatin C with or without serum creatinine. The authors are from Tufs-New England Medical Center, the Johns Hopkins University, Cleveland Clinic, University of Pennsylvania, Paris Descartes University (Paris), and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

Patient selection: chronic kidney disease (CKD)

estimated GFR is expressed in mL per min per 1.73 square meter

Parameters:

(1) serum cystatin C in mg/L

(2) serum creatinine in mg/dL

(3) gender

(4) race

(5) age in years

estimated GFR from cystatin C alone =

= 76.7 * ((cystatin C)^(-1.19))

estimated GFR from cystatin C, age, gender and race =

= 127.7 * ((cystatin C)^(-1.17)) * ((age)^(-0.13)) * (0.91 if female, 1 if male) * (1.06 if Black, 1 if not)

estimated GFR from cystatin C, age, gender, race and creatinine =

= 177.6 * ((cystatin C)^(-0.57)) * ((age)^(-0.2)) * (0.82 if female, 1 if male) * (1.11 if Black, 1 if not) * ((serum creatinine)^(-0.65))
