Description

Sprenger et al reported equations for predicting plasma volume for a patient. The authors are from the University of Dusseldorf and University of Ulm in Germany.

Parameters:

(1) sex

(2) height in cm

(3) weight in kg

(4) venous hematocrit in percent as a number from 0 to 100

plasma volume for a male in mL =

= (13.1 * (length)) + (18.05 * (weight)) - 480

plasma volume for a female in mL =

= (35.5 * (length)) + (2.27 * (weight)) - 3,382

These need to be adjusted for the effect of the body hematocrit on plasma volume when the blood volume is constant by multiplying a correction factor:

body hematocrit =

= 0.91 * (venous hematocrit)

correction factor =

= (100 - (body hematocrit)) / (100 - (normal body hematocrit))

where:

Normal body hematocrit for a male is 42.77 and for a female is 38.22.
