The volume of a testicle is based on an ellipsoid. Sotos and Tokar approximated the volume from the diameter of the testis as measured by ultrasonography. The authors are from Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ohio State University in Columbus.
Patient selection: pediatric male
Parameters:
(1) diameter of the scrotum on ultrasound in centimeters
(2) genital stage (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or adult)
(3) correction for scrotal skin
corrected diameter of the testis =
= (ultrasound value) - (correction for scrotal skin)
The correction for scrotal skin may consist of one of the following:
(1) 2 times the scrotal skin thickness in cm
(2) 0.15 cm if genital stage 1, 2 or 3
(3) 0.2 cm if genital stage 4, 5 or adult
Equation equivalent to (width) * (height) * (length) * 0.71
volume of the testis =
= ((corrected diameter)^3) * 0.88
Equation equivalent to (width) * (height) * (length) * 0.52
volume of the testis =
= ((corrected diameter)^3) * 0.64
